SHILLONG: In order to maintain law and order in the poll-bound state of Meghalaya the Election Commission of India has passed an order banning exit polls in the state till 7 PM on the day of polling.

The Chief Electoral Officer of the state of Meghalaya, FR Kharkhongor mentioned about this ban while telling that all campaigning for the Meghalaya Assembly polls will come to an end in the afternoon of Saturday, February 25.

"As per ECI protocols, exit polls are banned in the state from 7 am on February 24 till 7 pm on February 27. The silence period for campaigning will begin from 4 pm tomorrow (February 25)," mentioned FR Kharkhongor on Friday.

The Election Commission of India has also issued an advisory in the state of Meghalaya. This advisory mentions that mobile phones cannot be taken inside the voting compartments where the voting machines are kept in the polling booths across the state of Meghalaya. Although no reason was given regarding this advisory, it will prevent capturing of photos and videos of the equipment.

FR Kharkhongor has earlier mentioned that the voting will take place across 3419 polling booths across the state of Meghalaya. Out of them, 640 were identified as vulnerable, and 323 were identified as critical. A total of 84 polling booths of the state were classified as both vulnerable and critical.

A total of 53 poll observers have also been deployed by the Election Commission in the state of Meghalaya to ensure peaceful elections. Out of them, 20 have been allocated as general observers, 21 as expenditure observers and 12 as police observers for the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly polls.
